Pre-Congress Workshops

Workshop 1: Case studies in cancer pain management
This workshop will consist of case studies in cancerpain. Participants will be given various clinical scenarios and options for management will be discussed in small groups. The case discussions will focus on practical challenges that are commonly encountered in the management of patients with cancer pain, especially those with advanced cancer and widespread disease.
This workshop is suitable for doctors and allied health professionals with post basic training or experience in oncology and/or palliative care. The number of participants will be limited to 60 on a ?first come first served? basis.

Workshop 2: Ultrasound of musculoskeletal system
This workshop will give participants an opportunity to learn how ultrasound scanning can be used to aid in diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal disorders giving rise to chronic pain. Scanning of specific areas related to common musculoskeletal disorders encountered in chronic pain and rheumatology practice will be demonstrated ? this includes ultrasound of muscles, joints, the spine and paravertebral region. Participants will also have hands-on practice with scanning using live models. The number of participants will be limited to 30 on a "first come first served" basis.

Workshop 3: Psychological approaches used in the treatment of chronic pain - the role of allied health professionals

This workshop will give participants a clearer idea of how psychological approaches can be used to by allied health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses) to make treatment of chronic pain patients more effective. Participants will learn the practical aspects of relaxation, stretching, goal-setting, pacing and other strategies to cope with chronic pain. Specific case illustrations will be included. The number of participants will be limited to 50 on a "first come first served" basis.
